Four-Day Ceramics Course for Young Makers
6, 7, 9 and 10 July 2026
14:00–16:00 each day
29,900 ISK per participant
For children and teenagers aged 7–16
Learn the essential ceramic techniques through four focused and inspiring afternoons in the Studio Esja pottery studio.
During this four-day course, participants will explore pottery-wheel throwing, hand-building, botanical relief and surface decoration. With personal guidance, each young maker will begin developing a collection of functional ceramic pieces—objects made by their own hands and designed to become part of everyday life.
Participants may create cups, bowls, plates, small dishes, sculptural vessels or botanical relief pieces. Complete beginners will be guided carefully through every stage, while children and teenagers with previous experience can refine their skills and develop more personal forms and designs.
The course takes place over four separate days, giving participants time to explore different techniques and build a connected collection of ceramic work.
What Participants Will Learn
Pottery-Wheel Throwing
Participants will learn the foundations of working on the pottery wheel, including preparing and centring clay, opening the form and shaping simple cups, bowls or vessels.
Hand-Building
Using pinching, coiling and slab-building techniques, participants will create functional and sculptural forms by hand.
Botanical Relief
Flowers, leaves and grasses will be pressed into clay to capture their natural textures and create plates, dishes, tiles or decorative wall pieces.
Surface Decoration
Participants will explore texture, carving, stamping, coloured slips, underglazes and personal patterns to give each piece its own character.
Create a Personal Collection
Rather than making identical objects, every participant will be encouraged to make pieces that reflect their own ideas and interests.
The collection may include:
- A favourite cup
- A breakfast or snack bowl
- A small plate
- A handmade dish
- A botanical relief
- A sculptural vessel
- A personal ceramic object
The finished pieces can be used at home and enjoyed as part of everyday life.
Suitable for Beginners and Intermediate Makers
No previous experience is required.
Beginners will receive clear demonstrations and step-by-step support. Participants with previous experience can work on improving wheel control, developing stronger forms and creating more detailed projects.
Instruction will be adapted to each participant’s age, experience and working pace.
